Prior to the meeting, the chapter co-sponsored with East Central Florida CODEPINK and MFSO Florida, a rally/demonstration across from the main entrance to the Daytona Speedway, in conjunction with the Daytona 500. Responses from the race-goers was for the most part positive. About a dozen people participated, including members of Gators For 9/11 Truth and We Are Change Florida.
The Chapter held it's first ever meeting at the Seabreeze Coffee Connection in Daytona Beach. Charlie, Mary, Rafe, Phil, Geoff, Jim, John, Annie, Terry and Brett attended. The majority of the time was spent on introductions and discussing the breadth of our political opinions. All agreed that we support the Veterans For Peace philosophy and mission statement and will work toward those ends. It was decided that due to the vast geographical area we encompass, regular meetings are impractical and that we will function as branches in our various areas toward our common goals. It was also decided that the website will include a discussion board, viewable by the public but open only to members for posting and comments. The message board will also contain a voting option for members to vote on chapter business without requiring meetings. We will actively reach out to former members and encourage them to rejoin the chapter as well as recruit new members. We will also look for fund-raising opportunities on the local level to help alleviate some the expenses which in the past have been paid out-of-pocket by Phil and Geoff. Geoff handed out "Chicken-Hawk-In-Chief" t-shirts and provided some bumper stickers we can sell to raise money. Also, a thanks to Charlie for the organic Bolivian coffee, Annie for the cookies, and whoever brought the pizza.
