After our VFP Chapter was denied permission to participate in the annual Veterans Day Event sponsored by the Florida National Guard and local IVAW members were denied permission to march in the Veterans Day Parade in Jacksonville, we decided to sponsor our own event in the heart of historic touristy St. Augustine. We set up a table on the corner of Hypolita and St. George Streets and, with the help of our friends from St. Augustine People for Peace and Justice, we began to explain to locals and tourists why we not with the rest of the veterans. We handed out copies of VFP's Resolution on Prosecuting George W. Bush, Dick Cheney and Other Bush Administration Officials For War Crimes, Crimes against Peace and Crimes Against Humanity and the Resolution on Defederalizing the National Guard. We collected about on a petition in support of the War Crimes Resolution which will be presented to our federal congressional delegation. Even those who disagreed with us were appalled that we had been denied participation in the Veterans Day activities. The passer-bys were for the most part supportive of our position, including active duty military and recently returned veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Two young women, still on active duty and recently returned from Iraq stated it was a good day because “we are both here and alive.” Next year we will participate in both events - with or without "permission."

Great work, Terry and Rafe ... and the patriots there from PP&J. Sorry I couldn't join you this time around. As for parades, I say we go ahead and have our own parade ... a real hum-dinger of a parade. Looking forward to talking to you guys about it. Again, thanks for being out there today. - Phil Restino
